If you look closely at this photo, you’ll see two empty wire sign holders just past the shadow on the grass. Until sometime in the middle of last Friday night, these held a couple of political signs. One was a Harris-Walz campaign sign. Someone stole both signs. I have a message for the MAGA miscreant who stole the signs: Not only do you support a criminal, but you are a criminal. How does that make you feel? Oh, and the other sign? It was from the Utah Civics Project, a nonpartisan group my daughter helped organize to inform Utah citizens about their government and their civic duties. That sign merely encouraged people to vote. Sometimes I get disgusted living in Utah. Don’t get me going on the Republican legislature. Ugh.
But since the signs disappeared, I’ve
been trying to figure out what the thief was thinking. This person couldn’t
have been deluded enough to believe that my Harris-Walz yard sign would somehow
cause Trump to lose the vote in Utah. In fact, stealing all the Harris-Walz
yard signs in the state wouldn’t change the outcome of the vote in Utah. An article
in today’s Salt Lake Tribune may offer some insight. It chronicles the bad
behavior of Trump supporters in Washington County (St. George area). It appears
that much of the vandalism, profanity, and ugliness directed toward Democrats
in southern Utah is just a product of the hatred and lying that comes from the
head of the Republican Party. In supporting Trump, apparently anything goes. I’m
hoping that most of this reprehensible behavior isn’t coming from Latter-day
Saints, but then again, I’m not naïve.
So, let me speak directly to the
person who stole my yard signs and to others of his or her ilk. Why did you
wait until the cover of darkness to perform your dark deed? If you weren’t
ashamed of what you were doing, you would have taken it in broad daylight. If
you weren’t a coward like your MAGA file leader, you would have knocked on my
door and asked why I am supporting Kamala Harris for president. We could have possibly
had a productive conversation. But I’m just assuming you’re nothing but a petty
thief, a pale shadow of the master criminal who tried to steal the last
election and will do anything, including spouting an endless stream of lies and
vitriol, to win the next one. Whatever. You two deserve each other.
